It was good to see a few Iowa guys from the 2007 team land on NFL squads:
Charles Godfrey/Carolina Panthers/3rd Round (67th pick):
Godfrey lands in Carolina and is immediately slated to start…at safety! I saw a few interviews from Godfrey before the draft and he always answered the “Do you want to play safety or corner?” question with class; that might have helped him in the long run. And after I thought about it, I realized it made perfect sense. He’s physical as heck and plays better with the ball in front of him. I think Godfrey will have a nice NFL career at safety – and uphold the great tradition of Iowa safety’s that’s been put into place the past several years. Bob Sanders? No, but he’s a solid player that will make his team better.
Mike Humpal/Pittsburgh Steelers/6th Round (188th pick):
He won’t even have to change his wardrobe! If Humpal stays healthy, I think he’ll be a GREAT special teams player and a nice back-up. He just has to stay away from Ben Roethlisberger’s motorcycles.
Kenny Iwebema/Arizona Cardinals/4th Round (116th pick):
“He went where? When? Wow…bad pick.” That was my brother Daron’s take. I agree. He’s always injured, doesn’t have a motor, and doesn’t bring anything to the table for special teams.
Albert Young and Tom Busch/Minnesota Vikings/Free Agents:
Tough place for AY to land a roster spot at RB, although I hope he can make it.
Tom Busch comes home! After he gets cut, at least he won’t have far to go!
Bryan Mattison/New York Jets/Free Agent:
Not sure if they’ll keep him at DE or move him to DT. Either way, I hope he makes it.
